Sri Lankan governor resigns amid massive economic crisis
Finance minister also quits as crowds demonstrate against power cuts and food price rises
The Central Bank of Sri Lanka’s central bank governor has resigned after seven months in office as the country’s economic and humanitarian crisis worsens.
Ajith Nivard Cabraal announced his resignation today (April 4), as did all cabinet ministers except the prime minister. Finance minister Basil Rajapaksa, one of three brothers who have been running the government, was among those who stepped down.
Reporters said that large crowds of Sri Lankans are today demonstrating against the food
