President appoints ex-governor Cabraal to role after predecessor resigns amid growing crisis

Sri Lanka’s president has appointed Ajith Nivard Cabraal to lead the central bank after the incumbent resigned amid a growing economic crisis.

WD Lakshman announced on September 10 that he would step down from the role after 21 months in office. He was nominated for the role in November 2019, shortly following Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s election as president, and was confirmed in office a month later.
