Lagarde tells lawmakers eurozone must reform

Candidate for ECB president hints at possible greater openness to civil society groups

Christine Lagarde gave an assured performance before lawmakers considering whether she should be confirmed as the next president of the European Central Bank.

Lagarde faced questions from members of the European Parliament’s economic and monetary affairs committee in Brussels today (September 4). She agreed with many of the points raised, but rebutted a number of implicit criticisms of the ECB.

Her testimony contained no major surprises, but re-emphasised points she had made in written answers
