Romania’s central bank governor told the government in emergency talks that he strongly opposes a decree imposing a new tax on the country’s banks, Romanian media reports.

Governor Mugur Isărescu met senior members of Romania’s government after he was strongly criticised by leading members of the country’s most powerful political party. He made the remarks during what were essentially mediation talks between the central bank and the Romanian government, which have had an increasingly bitter
