Central bank recommends stricter framework than European Commission

European Central Bank: proposal “serves as a basis for a supervisory dialogue”

The European Central Bank today (March 15) published guidelines designed to prevent the accumulation of non-performing loans on banks’ balance sheets. The guidelines are notably stricter than the rules put forward by the European Commission on March 14.

The ECB and commission both recommend banks fully cover the unsecured parts of distressed loans two years after they become non-performing. But while the commission would grant banks eight years to cover the secured parts, the ECB recommends
