Mansur says authorities are working to save distressed commercial lenders

At least 10 commercial banks in Bangladesh are close to bankruptcy, the central bank governor told media on September 8.

Ahsan Mansur said the Bangladesh Bank was working to save the banks by providing them with technical, advisory and liquidity support.

He said he would form a task force to restore depositor confidence in the banks and added there was “no need to panic”.

The interim government, headed by Muhammad Yunus, is also looking into the issue, he said.
