Bank of Thailand to name new chair by October

Upcoming appointment adds uncertainty to relations between new government and central bank

The head of the committee charged with selecting a new chair of Thailand’s central bank has said an appointment will be made by early October.

The appointment could have implications for the central bank’s operations and its relations with the government headed by prime minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra. Previous prime ministers from her Pheu Thai party have put pressure on the Bank of Thailand (BoT) to cut rates.

Under current laws, the finance ministry will nominate one candidate for the chair
