Joining banking union likely positive for Sweden – Riksbank

Large cross-border activities mean common supervisory and resolution mechanisms better than national equivalents

Sveriges Riksbank says joining the European banking union would likely be positive for Sweden due to the large cross-border activities of Sweden’s banks across the region.

The central bank included this assessment in its response to a Swedish inquiry on the banking union. “The Swedish banking sector has extensive international operations, primarily within the EU [European Union] and in particular in the Nordic-Baltic region,” says the Riksbank. “This means that single supervision and resolution
