US president Donald Trump’s new trade tariffs could force the Federal Reserve to raise rates faster than expected if restrictions force prices higher, the director of the International Monetary Fund’s research department has warned.

Speaking at a press conference at the launch of the fund’s latest world economic outlook, Maurice Obstfeld said the Fed was “broadly on track” to continue raising rates over the next year.
