Offshoring of services could hinder job security – paper

National Bank of Belgium examines impact of offshoring goods and services and its effect on higher-educated workers

A working paper published by the National Bank of Belgium has concluded globalisation may threaten job security of higher-educated workers.

In their paper The impact of service and goods offshoring on employment: Firm-level evidence, the authors use a newly constructed database of Belgian firms that combines individual transaction-level data on international trade in goods and services with annual financial accounts.

Their evidence shows goods offshoring has a “positive impact” on employment
