Waller is latest Fed governor to sound warning over tariffs

Board member says effect on growth and jobs likely significant, but inflationary hit could be transitory

Christopher Waller has become the latest Federal Reserve governor to sound a warning over the impact of tariffs on the US economy.

In a speech on April 14, Waller said higher-for-longer tariffs could lead to an additional 1.5–2 percentage points in inflation. “That would mean inflation could reach a peak close to 5% on an annualised basis in the coming months,” he said.
