Banks’ understanding of clients helped smooth credit contraction during financial crisis – researchers

Spanish banks’ lending during the financial crisis and subsequent recovery was strongly influenced by their knowledge of individual firms, a working paper published by the Bank of Spain argues.

In Credit allocation along the business cycle: evidence from the latest boom-bust credit cycle in Spain, Roberto Blanco and Noelia Jiménez present a detailed dataset. They combine information from Spain’s central credit registry on loan applications with data from firms’ own accounts.

The authors find
