Uzbekistan launches new banknote as inflation erodes value
New 50,000 som note is five times the value of the next largest banknote
The Central Bank of Uzbekistan has launched its second banknote in a year, boosting the purchasing power of banknotes as inflation has eroded their value.
The new 50,000 som note, worth around $12, will become the highest denomination when it launches on August 22. It follows on from the 10,000 som note that was launched in March.
Banknotes as small as 1 som remain in circulation, despite being worth only around 0.02 of a US cent. Issued in 1994, these low-value notes came as the currency was
