Brief History

The National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) was established as an independent entity in May 1999. Prior to Ukraine’s independence in 1991, the NBU was known as a branch of the Soviet Gosbank. In 2015, the NBU’s institutional and operational independence was reinforced. Under the Ukrainian Constitution, the central bank’s primary mandate is to ensure that Ukraine’s currency – the hryvnia (UAH) – is stable.
