Brief History

In 1996, the Cayman Islands Monetary Authority (the Authority) was established as a body corporate under the Monetary Authority Law, and was brought into existence on 1 January 1997. The Authority was the product of a merger between the financial services supervision division, a government department responsible for financial regulation, and the currency board, a statutory board, which was responsible exclusively for currency matters.
