Mauritius’s Bheenick: Islamic banking expanding from niche market

Rundheersing Bheenick, the governor of Bank of Mauritius, on March 30, 2011 suggested the expansion of Islamic banking could lead the industry to rival conventional banking in some countries.

At the launch ceremony of Century Banking Corporation, the first Islamic bank in Mauritius, Bheenick said: "Islamic banking is now expanding out of its niche, becoming a market that could rival the conventional sector in many countries… we need to develop our own niche market and strive to become a regional
