Zeti Akhtar Aziz, the governor of Bank Negara Malaysia, on 25 October 2010 said liberalisation of Islamic finance in Malaysia allowed market to expand at a rapid pace.

At an event in Kuala Lumpur, Zeti said Malaysia's experience in Islamic finance officially began with the establishment of the Pilgrimage Fund or the Tabung Haji in 1969 as an Islamic savings institution. In 1983 the first Islamic bank was set up and in the following year, the first Takaful operator was established.
