FDIC’s Bair on US housing recovery

Sheila Bair, the chairman of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), has said signs point to a stabilisation of the US housing market.

Following three years of decline in US house prices, Bair offered listeners a reason for optimism as the Case-Shiller housing index rose slightly in 2009 and the National Association of Realtors index, a housing affordability measure, reached a historic high. "I think we're seeing some progress in stabilising our housing markets," she said in remarks
