ECB’s Stark on preserving price stability

Ex-ante co-ordination between fiscal and monetary authorities, as some voices have called for, is not an option in the pursuit of price stability, Jürgen Stark, a member of the executive board of the European Central Bank (ECB), has said.

Speaking on 4 September, Stark said: "This would undermine our independence and therefore violate our mandate. As in the past, our policy decisions will exclusively be based on our assessments of risks to price stability."

He noted that he was confident the ECB
