RBI paper explores challenges in public debt management

Research identifies a ‘narrow investor base’ as one hurdle

A working paper published by the Reserve Bank of India on August 10 highlights a host of challenges facing public debt management in the country, including a "narrow investor base".

In Public debt management in India and related issues, L Lakshmanan and R Kausaliya note this could be rectified by encouraging greater participation from "mid-segment and retial investors".

"Catering to the needs of retail investors will contribute to a stable demand for G-Secs, which can cushion the impact of sales
