Hong Kong’s markets mirror US in turbulent times

Hong Kong's financial markets appear to be more aligned with their US counterparts in turbulent times, but relatively more integrated with the mainland Chinese markets during tranquil periods, a new paper from the Hong Kong Monetary Authority reveals.

The analysis shows that the linkage across equity markets during the current crisis has become more complicated than in 2001. The main findings are that:

· the influence of the mainland equity market on the Hong Kong equity market has increased
