ECB calls for action as ABS market reaches ‘crossroads’

The European Central Bank (ECB) today called on European institutions to "leverage their expertise" and help "reactivate" the market for asset-backed securities (ABS) backed by loans to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

Spreads in the ABS markets fell across the eurozone in the past few months, but according to the ECB's monthly bulletin for September, many potential transactions "remain uneconomic" as the yield demanded by investors would require "high and unfeasible" interest rates on
