Brazilian policy-makers are facing a difficult balancing act, with inflation running in double-digits and the economy forecast to be heading for the longest recession in more than a century.

The central bank is in a particularly tough situation. Governor Alexandre Tombini has said it will adopt the "necessary measures" to bring inflation back to the 4.5% target. It expects to achieve this by the end of 2017, despite the challenging domestic and international environments.
