Irish regulations aim to extend protection to SMEs
Irish credit unions to come under SME lending regulation for first time
The Central Bank of Ireland published new regulations on lending to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) on December 18, aiming to "strengthen protection" for them, said Bernard Sheridan, director of consumer protection at the bank, while "facilitating access to credit".
For the first time, Ireland's credit union sector will be subject to regulation on its lending to SMEs, with the new rules coming in on January 1, 2017. They will apply to all other regulated Irish financial institutions
