Christine Lagarde, the International Monetary Fund's managing director, has dismissed internal criticism against the Fund's "premature" calls on advanced countries to slash spending in 2010–11.

Encouraging debt-laden countries, particularly in Europe, to tighten their budgets was the "right call to make", Lagarde said today, following the release of a report by the IMF's International Evaluation Office (IEO) on the Fund's response to the financial crisis.
