Bank of Guyana governor dies of cancer

Lawrence Williams, who spent 35 years with the bank, has passed away

Lawrence Williams, governor of the Bank of Guyana (BoG), has died of cancer at the age of 59.

Williams, the BoG's governor and chief executive officer since 2005, passed away yesterday at a hospital in Georgetown, Guyana, the bank said. He leaves behind a wife and three children, according to Kaiteur News, a local daily.

Ashni Singh, Guyana's finance minister, described Williams as "a gentleman and an astute professional" with whom he had developed "a strong personal friendship", the daily said
