Fed remains guarded on rate hike

The Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) on Wednesday maintained its line that it would keep the key federal funds rate between 0% and 0.25% for "an extended period".

Leading newspapers had reported in the run-up to the meeting that the FOMC was debating whether to drop the reference to "an extended period" in order to suggest that a rate hike could occur within the next six months.

Most analysts viewed such a move in Wednesday's statement as unlikely, believing that officials would hint at any
