Inflation leap adds to expectation of rate rise

UK - Inflation leapt in January, outstripping economists' expectations and raising fears that companies are exploiting surging consumer demand to push up prices.

The rapid rise of underlying RPIX inflation from 1.9 per cent to 2.6 per cent - above the Bank of England's 2.5 per cent target - surprised investors who increased their expectations for interest rate rises this year. But speaking last night, Sir Edward George, Bank governor, said the figures were "no doubt to some extent erratic"
