Poland may join EU zone in 2006 says central bank

President of the National Bank of Poland (NBP) Leszek Balcerowicz sees the possibility of Poland's joining the European Monetary Union in 2006 provided that the standard two-year ERM2 period is shortened.

So far the Finance Ministry and NBP representatives mentioned 2007 as the possible date.

However, a week ago NBP Deputy President Andrzej Bratkowski told PAP that the European law had adopted a flexible attitude to the new exchange-rate mechanisms and allows for different interpretations.

He added
