Meirelles's ministerial status 'unconstitutional'

Brazil's state prosecutor, Claudio Fonteles, was quoted by AFX as saying that the presidential decree to grant the president of the central bank Henrique Meirelles cabinet minister status was unconstitutional.

The decree was intended to protect Meirelles from prosecution in common courts, AFX said, and was signed by President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in August.

The leader of Lula's Workers Party had accused the prosecutor's office of bias and said it was politically motivated therefore justifying
