BOI sees worse than expected 2001 global slowdown

World economic growth could slow down in 2001 by more than expected, the Bank of Italy warned in its half-yearly economic bulletin on Mar 14, 2001. It also said Japan could risk slipping into recession, particularly after it registered a fall in Jan 2001 industrial production figures.

The central bank said the growth outlook for the eurozone in 2001 was uncertain and growth could be even lower than expected. It said 2001 eurozone growth could be 0.5 percentage points lower than in 2000 when it
