Gov't lifts demand deposit freeze - Argentina

ARGENTINA - Argentina's government will begin to lift the freeze on demand deposits to facilitate transactions in the depressed economy, local broadsheet La Nacion reported.

The central bank decided Monday night to allow new accounts that will not be restricted by the partial deposit freeze imposed in December last year to halt a massive run on the banks' deposits.

The central bank's move will free up 6.7bn pesos (US$1.83bn) of frozen demand deposits.
