Taiwan c bank chief protests name change at ADB

CHINA - Central Bank of China (CBC) Governor Perng Fai-nan on Saturday protested Taiwan's name change in the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

Perng, the head of a Republic of China delegation from Taiwan attending the ADB's 35th board conference in Shanghai, said the ROC [Republic of China], as an ADB founding country which has faithfully fulfilled its obligations, will make the protest every year.

The ADB changed Taiwan's designation from the ROC to "Taipei, China" in 1986, when mainland China was admitted to the organization.

"Member countries should respect each other, and everyone should be treated fairly," the CBC governor said.

Giving a speech during the conference, Perng called for greater international cooperation, especially among Asian countries, in the wake of the 1997 Asian financial crisis and the terrorist attacks against the United States last 11 September.

Perng proposed that the ADB play a more active role and set up a network to help secure financial systems in the region. He also said Southeast Asian countries should ink free trade agreements to boost economic activity.
