Brazil's Senate approves central bank immunity law

Brazil's Senate has approved a law that gives central bank president Henrique Meirelles Cabinet-level status, giving him immunity from prosecution for crimes in all courts except the country's highest.

The senate passed the measure late Wednesday night, giving a victory to President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva but angering opponents who criticised the move because it was introduced at Meirelles request in July following media reports alleging he failed to declare income earned overseas to tax and
