ADB appoints new chief economist

The Asian Development Bank has appointed Dr. Arvind Panagariya, Professor of Economics at Maryland University in the United States, as Chief Economist. Professor Panagariya will take up the position in early April 2001.

Professor Panagariya, who is also co-director for the University of Maryland's Center for International Economics, has had extensive experience with multilateral institutions. He worked for the World Bank as a research economist from 1989 to 1993 and has been a Visiting Scholar at
