President appoints new Bank of Finland member

FINLAND - Finnish President Tarja Halonen on Friday appointed a surprise candidate to the Bank of Finland's board after an embarrassed government dropped the nominations of two veteran politicians.

Halonen said she had appointed former banker Pentti Hakkarainen because he was the only candidate that she and the whole government could back unanimously.

Hakkarainen is the former head of Leonia Bank, now part of the Sampo bancassurance group.

Earlier, the government had proposed former prime minister
