Average cost of running RTGS systems is $1.8 million

Annual costs slightly higher than last year’s benchmark

The Payments Benchmarks 2024 reveal the average annual running cost of respondent central banks’ real-time gross settlement systems is $1.8 million US dollars. The highest cost reported was nearly $16 million.

The average cost rose from last year’s benchmark. Central banks that provided data in 2023 (11 institutions) spent an average of $1.7 million operating their primary RTGS system. The expenditure ranged from a maximum of $13.7 million in a high-income institution in Europe, to just $26,480
