Majority of central banks charge RTGS usage fee

Annual cost of running RTGS systems ranged between $35,000 to over $16 million

Over 80% of central banks charge participants of their real-time gross settlement (RTGS) systems a fee, according to Central Banking’s Payments Benchmarks 2021. 

Of the 37 central banks that participated in the benchmark, only 33 provided details of their fee structure. While 28 central banks charge fees, a further five provide RTGS access for free. 

Fifteen central banks provided data on their exact pricing, which ranged from annual fee structures to charging per transaction.
