Most governors lack legal immunity against prosecution

One-fifth of removable central bank governors shielded from legal actions

Most central bank governors have no legal immunity from prosecution during their service term, the Governance Benchmarks 2025 reveal.

Three in four (74.6%) respondents say their governors lack immunity from prosecution while in service. However, the sample has 16 jurisdictions where sitting governors are protected from legal proceedings.
