Economist salaries outpace GDP per capita

Salaries were six times higher than GDP per capita, on average

Central banks tend to pay their economists considerably more than the level of GDP per capita in their country.

Fifteen central banks provided data on the salaries of their economists, for those below director level. These ranged from $21,683 to $120,000. The median was $40,600. 

Respondents were fairly evenly spread between Africa, the Americas and Europe (27% each), and 20% in the Asia-Pacific region. Percentages do not add up to 100 due to rounding.
