Chilean government officials dispute central bank’s currency role
Finance minister reproves official spokesperson as currency continues steep fall
Officials in Chile’s government publicly disagreed after one of them called for the central bank to prop up the country’s currency.
The Chilean peso has fallen from about 810 to the US dollar in the first week of June to 992.6 on July 11. On July 6, the exchange rate briefly passed the 1,000:1 mark. Over the last year, the peso has fallen around 30% against the dollar.
