The world’s first retail CBDC tiptoes into existence

The launch of the world’s first central bank digital currency should have generated some furore among the central banking and digital currency community. However, when the Central Bank of the Bahamas became the first central bank in the world to issue a retail CBDC, it almost slipped by unnoticed.

In a short Facebook post on October 20, the central bank announced – in less than 15 words – it had fully transitioned its ‘sand dollar’ pilot to a full scale, nationwide launch.
