NBP's Balcerowicz critical of extending powers

In the opinion of National Bank of Poland (NBP) head Leszek Balcerowicz, proposals to amend the NBP Act could lead to exerting political pressure on the institution, Polish News Bulletin reported.

According to the coalition agreement signed by Law and Justice, Self-Defence (Samoobrona) and the League of Polish Families (LPR), the NBP would also be responsible for economic growth.

"The only thing the central bank should have influence over are interest rates. Reducing taxes, public finance reform and doing away with red tape in the economy lie in the competence of the government," said Balcerowicz.

The NBP head was also quoted by Polish News Bulletin as commenting on the motion filed by Deputy Prime Ministers Roman Giertych, Andrzej Lepper and Ludwik Dorn, who are demanding a detailed explanation regarding the bank's profits in 2005.

"The NBP's financial report is drawn up in accordance with accounting rules accepted by the EBC. It was looked into by an independent auditor, who had no reservations towards the document," said Balcerowicz.
