Dedollarisation pushing central banks to issue CBDC, official says

Asked whether central bank digital currency (CBDC) will contribute to dedollarisation, a board member from a central bank in Latin America said: “I think dedollarisation is pushing central banks to issue CBDC”.

It is “very clear” that this is the case, the board member told the Central Banking Autumn Meetings 2024 in Mexico City. He pointed to the European Union’s digital sovereignty strategy, which aims to cut Europe’s reliance on foreign payments providers, namely those based in the US.
