DNB study sounds alarm over youngsters’ payment habits

“Fun” justifications for big purchases storing up trouble for future, says research

The illogical but “fun” reasons that some young people use to justify big spending could lead to bad financial habits in the future, according to new research from the Netherlands Bank (DNB).

Researchers Marie-Claire Broekhoff and Carin van der Cruijsen say changing payment habits are affecting how people view money, and that young people find paying by cash relatively painless.

“We strongly suspect that growing up with debit cards and smartphones has something to do with it,” they say.
