Bank of England makes first rate hike since 2023
MPC votes shift from 3-6 to 8-1 in favour of 25bp increase to 4%
The Bank of England today (November 5) hiked rates by 25 basis points to 4%, in line with market expectations.
The decision was reached by an 8-1 majority vote on the bank’s monetary policy committee (MPC). It is the first rate hike since August 2023, and comes after the committee held policy at 3.75% for 10 consecutive meetings. The sole dissenter on the MPC was Catherine Mann, who voted to tighten policy by 50bp. At the previous MPC meeting, only three dissenting members voted for a 25bp hike
