Inflation expectations rising due to tariffs – BoC’s Macklem

Governor says Canada’s central bank will pursue policy that works in multiple scenarios

Canadian businesses and consumers have been expecting higher prices as they gauge the uncertain impacts of US tariffs, the Bank of Canada (BoC) governor has said.

Speaking in Calgary yesterday (March 20), Tiff Macklem said the tariffs threatened by the US would hurt key sectors of Canada’s economy, such as energy, agriculture and manufacturing.

US president Donald Trump has announced 25% tariffs on non-energy imports and 10% on energy imports from Canada. These measures initially went into effect
