Philippines’ Espenilla on indefinite sick leave

Deputy governors will rotate to perform his duties, central bank says

The governor of the Central Bank of the Philippines (BSP) has taken an indefinite leave of absence owing to ill health.

It is not clear whether Nestor Espenilla’s latest period of leave is related to a cancer scare in 2017.

“The governor is on extended or continuing medical leave,” a representative from the central bank’s corporate affairs office tells Central Banking.

“While he is away, BSP deputy governors will be assigned on rotation basis as OIC [officer in charge] in accordance with
