Vietnam jails former deputy governor for negligence

Conviction comes as government cracks down on alleged corruption in banking sector

A Vietnamese court has sentenced a former deputy governor of the country’s central bank to three years in jail for negligently supervising a failed bank.

Dang Thanh Binh was found guilty of “negligence of responsibilities, causing serious consequences” by a court in Ho Chi Minh City on July 1, according to local reporters. Binh was a deputy governor at the State Bank of Vietnam from 2005 until August 2014, when he retired.

The case centred on Binh’s supervision of the Vietnam Construction Bank
