Goodhart and Pradhan: demographics will reverse ‘multi-decade’ trends

Ageing population likely to put upward pressure on real interest rates and inflation, economists say

Demographics can explain three major economic trends, and may also lead to their reversal in the years ahead, according to work by economists Charles Goodhart and Manoj Pradhan.

The pair argue much recent research on demographics has failed to be fully global in scope, suggesting that by incorporating the full global labour market, and studying trends in real interest rates, inequality and inflation together, they can shed new light on important economic questions.
